Сурикат

Meerkats (lat. Suricata) are playful and active animals that captivate everyone! These adorable creatures belong to the mongoose family and inhabit deserts in southwestern Africa, primarily in the Kalahari region (Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa).

Appearance

Meerkats are small, weighing around 600-950 grams and measuring 25-35 cm in length. Their elegant tails are about 17.5-25 cm long. Females are typically larger than males. Their long legs with strong claws are perfect for digging burrows. Meerkats have soft, dense fur with unique black stripes on an orange-brown background. Their faces are white, noses brown, ears black, and tails yellow with black tips.

Lifestyle

These animals are diurnal, living in large, friendly colonies of 20-30 individuals. Colonies have sentinels who stand on their hind legs, vigilantly watching for danger.

Social Structure

Meerkat society is matriarchal, led by a dominant female who is the only one to breed. They communicate using various vocalizations, possessing their own "language" of 20-25 distinct sounds.

Diet

Meerkats are predators, feeding on insects, lizards, scorpions, snakes, spiders, and bird eggs. They also enjoy vegetables and fruits. Their unique immunity allows them to handle the venom of scorpions and snakes.

Reproduction

The breeding season lasts from October to May. A female can produce up to three litters per season, each consisting of up to seven offspring. Babies begin to see in their second week and nurse for about 7.5 weeks.

Meerkats as Pets

Meerkats adapt well to domestic life in homes or enclosures. They are gentle and affectionate pets. In South Africa, they're kept to control rodents and snakes. At home, meerkats mark their territory, but their scent is undetectable to humans. At night, meerkats remain in their sleeping area, so bedding or diapers can be used for convenience. They coexist peacefully with cats and dogs.

Essential Home Setup

A meerkat needs a comfortable house, litter box with filler, feeder, water dispenser, and a play area with toys.

Diet for Domestic Meerkats

Meerkats have a diet similar to that of cats and dogs: lean meat, eggs, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, or high-quality prepared pet food. Zoophobas (mealworms) can be used as treats.
